Sailing in Costa Rica:
The development of the Puerto Azul Resort and private Marina in Puntarenas Costa Rica will give Costa Rica its second full service yachting private marina. In concert with the developers vision, the positioning of the resort as the premier sailing and yachting destination on the west coast of the country, the long term plan includes an onsite sailing school, charter company and yacht sales facility.
The sailing area around Puerto Azul is remarkable. The close proximity of several islands, uninhabited and teaming with wild life, deer, birds, iguanas reflects the countries commitments and reputation as one of the most environmentally friendly countries on the planet. The surrounding scenery, including distant volcanoes, mountains and rainforest lend to a unique sailing atmosphere seldom found. With winds consistently in the 12-30 knot range from NE to Westerlies in the winter the sailing is very nice. The Gulf Of Nicoya is famous for its green “Big Eyed” turtles, hundreds of miles of virgin coast line, Humpback whales and warm clean waters with miles of virgin beaches.
The private marina itself is protected and has 8 ft of water at MLLW. The tide range is approximately 4.5 ft @ 6 knots. It is 1.5 miles from the private marina to the outlet into the gulf and is lined by fishing fleets, fish markets and boat yards.
Fishing in Costa Rica
With some of the best sportfishing in Central America, Costa Rica offers incredible fishing opportunities inland and off the coast. The sportfishing in Costa Rica is world-class and the sportfishing industry itself is firmly established. Since most of the Costa Rican sportfishing companies and tour groups follow a strict ‘catch and release’ policy, the variety of fish off the coast and inland is truly amazing. This is done because Costa Ricans are aware of the importance of sustainable tourism and the proper conservation of key fish species.
Costa Rica has some of the finest and most diverse fishing on the planet. And since Costa Rica covers a small land area, the Pacific coast is easily accessible from the capital city San Jose, with just 90 minutes of driving time from the International Airport to get to the Pacific Ocean.
The Puerto Azul surroundings are famous for Blue and Black Marlins, Sailfish and Dorados. When fishing along the Pacific Coast, do keep in mind that the fish here move seasonally, with May to September offering the best catches.
